In one of the more bizarre recent sports happenings, Jets Quarterback Geno Smith was sucker-punched in the locker room by their 2014 6th round draft pick, linebacker Ikemefuma Enemkpali (pronounced n-m-paul-eh). Smith broke his jaw and will have surgery that will keep him out 6-10 weeks, and the Jets immediately released ‘IK.’
The dispute was reportedly over Smith committing to attend Enemkpali’s football camp in Texas but no-showing, which cost IK $600 for the ticket. The logical recourse, of course, was a surprise attack. Reports made it sound like the two parties shared culpability in letting the incident come to blows.
Geno proclaimed his eventual return (see below), but this is the latest in a long line of sad Quarterback stories for the Jets, who seem like a bad jokes punchline (ba-dum-cha! – speaking of bad jokes). Honestly though, Geno was just not that good in his rookie season last year, and the Jets likely won’t be that much worse-off without him. Their backup is rookie Bryce Petty out of Baylor, and they’re interviewing additional guys to bring in.
For his part, Enemkpali was signed by the Buffalo Bills the day after he was waived — the Bills coached by former Jets head coach Rex Ryan. What an epic troll move by Rex!
